Santa Catarina: MpD opens political year with call to strengthen confidence in party and governance
The Movement for Democracy (MpD) opened the political year in Santa Catarina on Saturday, 13, with a strong appeal to strengthen confidence in the party and its ability to continue to govern Cape Verde in various contexts.
The party's president, Ulisses Correia e Silva, highlighted the resilience of the country and the government in the face of successive crises faced since 2016, stressing that confidence is built in difficult times.
In this regard, the Prime Minister also recalled the Executive's response to severe droughts, the Covid-19 pandemic, the inflationary crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and the recent extreme weather events on several islands.
He said that these responses have made it possible to protect people, families, farmers, fishermen and small businesses, to revive the economy and to keep indicators such as inflation, unemployment and poverty on a downward trajectory.
"The MpD has shown that it is prepared to govern, protect and rebuild, reinforcing the largest welfare state ever built in Cape Verde," he said, pointing to advances in employment, social inclusion income, access for young people to training, entrepreneurship and housing, as well as wage appreciation in the civil service and the private sector.
The MpD leader also argued that political stability, good governance and respect for the separation of powers strengthen the country's international credibility, calling for the party's internal mobilization to consolidate the confidence of Cape Verdeans.
In relation to Santiago Norte, Ulisses Correia e Silva announced the continuity and reinforcement of structural investments, with emphasis on the completion and inauguration of asphalted roads in various sections, urban and environmental requalification, as well as the construction and equipping of health centers in the municipalities that still don't have them.
He also referred to projects to support agriculture and livestock, the recovery of infrastructure affected by recent rains and the preparation of an agro-industrial park in the region, with the aim of adding value to local production, creating jobs and increasing farmers' incomes.
At a national level, the MpD president pointed to the consolidation of economic growth, the continued reduction of unemployment and poverty, and the strengthening of social policies as priorities.
Among the main projects planned are the extension of the housing support program, with greater interest subsidies for young people and families, an increase in the minimum wage, investment in professional training and youth entrepreneurship, as well as the continuation of major public works in the areas of roads, health, education, water and sanitation.
In his speech, Ulisses Correia e Silva also criticized the opposition (PAICV), accusing it of adopting a negativist and populist stance, without consistent alternatives for the country, while reaffirming the MpD's commitment to the rule of law.
The party leader stressed respect for the independence of the courts, the separation of powers and the autonomy of the Public Prosecutor's Office, guaranteeing that the MpD does not interfere in justice and that "the defense of democratic legality is an essential pillar of stability and trust in Cape Verde".
