Sculptor Domingos Luisa hits back at MP's criticism of restoration of Eugénio Tavares statue
Nova Sintra City, January 31, 2026 (Bravanews) - Renowned Cape Verdean sculptor Domingos Luisa has broken his silence on social media to respond to harsh criticism made by MP João José Delgado. The controversy began after the MP compared the current state of restoration work on the Eugénio Tavares statue to the figure of a "mandinga".
The comparison, which quickly circulated on the internet, sparked outrage among the artist, who is known for his technical rigor and contribution to the country's plastic arts.
In a short and direct publication, Domingos Luisa deplored the lack of technical knowledge and the "impatience" shown by the deputy in the face of a work that is still in progress.
"Honestly, I can't believe what I've just read! It's ridiculous," said the sculptor. "The restoration process I use goes through phases, orderly processes. The person didn't have the patience to wait to see the end of the work. Ago?"
Luisa stressed that the restoration of historical monuments is not immediate and requires specific stages that can temporarily alter the aesthetic appearance of the work before the final result. According to experts in the field, the use of putties, solvents or preliminary protective layers is common and can, to the layman's eye, look strange before finishing.
