Bravanews intends to launch an initial survey of the potential candidates for deputy on the island of Brava and their level of acceptance among the electorate.

Nova Sintra City, November 21, 2025 (Bravanews) - With just over six months to go until the 2026 parliamentary elections, Bravanews intends to start a consultation process with potential candidates for the Brava constituency, representing the country's two largest parties: the ruling Movement for Democracy (MpD) and the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV).

Bravanews intends to launch an initial survey of the potential candidates for deputy on the island of Brava and their level of acceptance among the electorate.

The aim of this initiative is to find out which names might be included in the public opinion poll that Bravanews intends to carry out, allowing Bravenses to assess in advance the most likely profiles to head the party lists.

Five potential candidates identified in the local political arena were contacted:

  • Clovis Silva, leader of the PAICV caucus in the National Assembly and current national deputy for the Brava circle (PAICV)

  • Samuel Varela, MpD MP replacing Fernanda Burgo

  • Francisco Tavares, former mayor of Brava

  • Carlos (Carlinhos) Martins, President of the PAICV Regional Political Commission in Brava

  • João Paulo Silva, municipal deputy and secretary of the Bureau of the Municipal Assembly

The substitute national deputy, Samuel Varela, from the MpD, was the first to respond to Bravanews' contact, stating that his name could be included in the opinion poll and that he is fully available if his party feels this is the most appropriate choice. Varela's response reinforces the perception that he intends to stay in the race and shows openness to a possible official candidacy.

Also João Paulo Silva, a well-known figure in the local political scene, confirmed that his name could be included in the survey. His availability shows that the young political leader wants to be present in an increasingly competitive debate within the local party space.

On the other hand, both Francisco Tavares - who recently finished his term as mayor, losing the election to Amandio Brito - and Clovis Silva, leader of the PAICV bench in the AN and current PAICV national deputy, one of the most experienced figures in the Bravense political arena, did not respond to messages sent by Bravanews.

The lack of response from these two names, both usually considered strong candidates, leaves speculation in the air about their position at this early pre-election stage.

Sources close to the Movement for Democracy do not advise exposing Francisco Tavares at this time, as he has just lost the local elections and could lead to the MpD's score in Brava dropping even further.

Clovis Silva, who has recently been gaining a lot of prominence within the PAICV at a national level, is being considered as one of the strong names for the Santiago Sul constituency, and in the event of the PAICV winning the elections, he is a potential name for Minister of Justice.

The president of the CPR/PAICV of Brava, Carlinhos Martins, has announced that he does not intend to comment at the moment, considering it "premature" to discuss his possible inclusion in the opinion poll.
Martins stressed that he is waiting for the green light from the PAICV, indicating that any decision will depend on the guidelines of the party's national leadership and the internal strategy that will be defined.

With these answers, Bravanews will move on to the preparation phase of the opinion poll, which should include the names that have expressed their availability. If the parties clarify their preliminary lists, the poll could be adjusted.

This poll marks the informal start of the electoral battle in Brava, where internal disputes, the weight of local figures and the direct relationship with the population play a decisive role.

The island is thus preparing for months of intense political movement, which could define not only the candidates, but the very course of Brava's representation in the National Assembly.
