MPs accused of abandoning the Bravense cause: Voices from the island demand immediate action

Cidade de Nova Sintra, September 1, 2025 (Bravanews) - Brava has once again raised a cry of despair at what it considers to be the political and institutional abandonment to which it has been subjected. The complaint came from emigrant and businessman Andy Andrade, who sharply questions the lack of positioning and action by the nation's parliamentarians, particularly those elected by the island's constituency and the diaspora, in the face of the problems that continue to affect the people of Brava.

According to Andrade, since the withdrawal of the Kriola ferry from the port of Furna - a measure that has further aggravated the island's already fragile mobility - the population has lived through a constant cycle of "abuse, neglect and abandonment". However, he accuses, the MPs have preferred to remain "blind, deaf and dumb", without resorting to the institutional mechanisms that could help resolve the situation.

"A few days ago we saw the MPs from Santiago Sur take their concerns to the National Police Command in defense of democracy. Rightly or wrongly, they had courage, showed action and demanded immediate answers," Andrade recalls. "What about the representatives of the Bravense community? Did they ever get together to take the people's concerns to the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the PGR, the Ombudsman or even the Supreme Court of Justice, in the name of the human and constitutional rights of the Bravenses?" he asks.

The appeal also extends to the deputies from Fogo, pointing out that the Fogo-Brava region is often presented as a unit. "If it's true that the region should be considered as one, united and with equal dignity, then when one member suffers, all suffer," Andrade stresses.

In total, 11 MPs could join forces to provide a definitive response to the Brava's difficulties. However, criticism suggests that the lack of unity and political pressure has prolonged the suffering of the population, both on the island and in the diaspora.

The harsh tone of the appeal reflects the growing impatience of Bravenses with the lack of concrete solutions to the problems of mobility, development and political representation that continue to mark the reality of the "forgotten island".
