Ilha Brava: Legislative elections begin to take shape in the main political parties

Cidade de Nova Sintra, December 17, 2025 (Bravanews) - With just over six months to go until the next legislative elections, the political chessboard on the island of Brava is beginning to move, with clear signs of repositioning, internal talks and the emergence of names that could dispute the leadership of the electoral lists of the country's two largest parties, the PAICV and the MpD. As is traditional in Brava politics, the moves are made discreetly, but the information circulating in local political circles points to a pre-campaign that is beginning to take shape.

Ilha Brava: Legislative elections begin to take shape in the main political parties

Within the PAICV, one of the main developments concerns the political future of the current MP elected for the Brava constituency and leader of the PAICV caucus, Clóvis Silva. Sources close to the party indicate that the parliamentarian may be preparing "other flights", considering the possibility of positioning himself on the PAICV list for Santiago Sul, one of the largest and most contested constituencies in the country. If this option were to materialize, it would open up space for a new party list leader on the island of Brava, launching an internal dispute.

With this scenario in the background, two names are gaining prominence within the PAICV structures to head the list for Brava. The first is Jorge Reverdes, a well-known party activist and fervent supporter of Francisco Carvalho, the current President of the PAICV. Reverdes acted as a trustee for Francisco Carvalho's candidacy during the internal elections held last June, a fact that gives him visibility and political weight within the party, especially among the sectors most aligned with the current national leadership.

The second name to emerge strongly is that of Carlinhos Martins, the current President of the PAICV Regional Political Commission in Brava. With an established track record in the local party structures, Carlinhos Martins is seen as a figure with internal consensus and a deep knowledge of the island's political, social and economic reality. For many activists, his possible candidacy could guarantee continuity, organization and greater proximity to the party's grassroots.

On the MpD side, the scenario is no less dynamic. Two big names are emerging as potential candidates for the next legislative elections. One of them is Francisco Tavares, former Mayor of Brava, a central figure in local politics in recent years and with a solid support base on the island. His municipal experience and in-depth knowledge of Brava's structuring issues are seen as important assets in a possible candidacy.

The other name on the table is that of Samuel Varela, the current national MP elected for the Brava constituency on the MpD lists. Known for his speeches in the National Assembly, Samuel Varela has been active in defending the island's main concerns, namely in the areas of transport, health, infrastructure and regional development. His re-candidacy is seen as a natural option by various sectors of the party.

Although there are no official decisions or formal announcements yet, the signs are clear: the legislative elections have already begun on the island of Brava. The next few months will be decisive for defining the lists, with internal negotiations, political alignments and possible last-minute surprises. On an island where politics is lived with great intensity, everything indicates that the electoral contest will once again be marked by strong debate, grassroots mobilization and redoubled attention to the real needs of the Brava population.
