PAICV/Brava accuses government of electioneering after government delegation's visit to the island

Nova Sintra, February 2, 2026 (Bravanews) - The PAICV Brava Regional Political Commission has reacted critically to the recent visit of a government delegation to the island, classifying it as a last-minute electioneering maneuver with no concrete results for local development. The position was made public in a press release issued this Tuesday, February 3, signed by the party's regional president, Carlinhos Martins.

According to the PAICV/Brava, the delegation was made up of more than twenty leaders, including 12 members of the government, a number that the party considers to be unprecedented on the island over the last decade. For the PAICV leaders, the size of the delegation contrasts sharply with the previous ten years of MpD rule, a period in which, allegedly, Brava never received more than one member of the government simultaneously.

In the statement, the PAICV maintains that the visit is taking place just a few months before the legislative elections and is accompanied by the signing of protocols which, in practice, are nothing more than "declarations of intent", with no guarantees of funding or immediate implementation of projects. The party claims that there are no clear commitments to transfer funds or deadlines for the implementation of the announced promises.

The Regional Political Commission also points out that, in ten years of government, the only work considered relevant to the island is the road linking Fajã d'Água to Palhal, the construction of which has only just begun, after a long period of waiting. For the PAICV, this is evidence of the abandonment to which Brava has been consigned, with a lack of structural investment in key areas.

Among the main criticisms pointed out are the persistent difficulties in the transport sector, which continue to isolate the population, the lack of significant improvements in public health and the absence of funds in the current State Budget for the construction of a new health center, despite promises made by the government.

The party believes that the current government movement shows "panic" in the face of the approaching elections, accusing the Executive of trying to reverse the trend with late promises, symbolic gestures and protocols with no real impact. "The Bravense population will not be fooled by crumbs at the end of the cycle," the statement said, stressing that the island does not accept being remembered only during election periods.

In the statement, the PAICV/Brava lists a number of demands that it considers to be priorities for the island's development, highlighting the need for regular and dignified maritime and air transport, quality health services with a properly equipped health center, real investments with funds secured and works underway, and greater institutional respect for Brava as an integral and essential part of Cape Verde.

The Regional Political Commission concludes by stating that the population is attentive and vigilant, rejecting what it considers to be a last-minute strategy by a government "at the end of its cycle". For the PAICV, Brava doesn't want future promises or symbolic actions, but respect, investment and concrete development in the present.

The communiqué is signed by Carlinhos Martins, President of the PAICV Regional Political Commission of Brava, and is dated February 3, 2026, in Nova Sintra.
