Brava: Biflores Association in the final phase of a project to restructure the livestock sector.
Carlos Bango, land conservation technician at the Biflores Association, reported today that the association is in the final phase of implementing a project to restructure the livestock sector on Brava Island.
According to Carlos Bango, the project, funded by the German Embassy in the amount of 25,000 dollars, has as its main objective to support the livestock sector and local breeders, covering various aspects, from the mobilization of forage and water for livestock through fog harvesting, to the creation of forage fields.
The official further explained that the initiative also focuses on the organization and transformation of livestock products, aiming to boost and make the sector more profitable.
According to the same source, the available funding made it possible to acquire some equipment that was lacking at the livestock cooperative's unit in the municipality.
"Although the amount is not enough to solve all the sector's problems, we believe it will make a significant contribution to boosting and adding value to livestock products," he stressed.
Among the main challenges facing the sector, the technician pointed to difficulties in the distribution and processing of products, noting that the island's factories have been out of operation for some time.
However, he assured that, with the resources mobilized by the project, the necessary conditions for the resumption of the factory's activities could be created in the short term.
At the same time, the association expresses great concern for animal health and welfare.
Currently, a vaccination and sample collection campaign is underway on the island, with the aim of identifying the main types of diseases affecting livestock on Brava and defining joint intervention strategies among partners.
This action falls within the scope of strengthening animal health and knowledge about the predominant diseases in the island's livestock sector and is being carried out in partnership with the Covets Association, also counting on the support of the Biflores Association, Veterinarians Without Borders (Portugal), among other partners.
