Cape Verdean Melanie Santiago has been accepted into the prestigious University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, where she began her studies. Daughter of Moisés Santiago, a native of Brava Island, and Helena Gomes, from São Vicente, Melanie grew up in São Vicente, where she developed a deep connection with nature and animals, which inspired her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Melanie shared details of her journey, from her childhood in São Vicente to her decision to move to the United States in 2015 to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. “I’ve always felt a deep connection with animals, as if we shared a mutual understanding,” Melanie revealed. She highlighted the importance of childhood experiences, such as caring for her first pet, a puppy named Bilu, and watching animal documentaries, which solidified her passion for veterinary medicine.

Melanie dedicated herself to her studies and volunteered at a veterinary clinic throughout high school, where she learned a lot about animal care and gained valuable hands-on experience. After high school, Melanie was accepted to Bridgewater State University, where she graduated Cum Laude in 2021 with a degree in Biology. Her academic journey included challenging research on Lyme disease, as well as active participation as president of the university’s Cape Verdean Student Association.

However, Melanie’s path to acceptance to the University of Arizona was not without its challenges. She faced obstacles, including the need to find a new mentor after her veterinarian suffered a stroke, which delayed her application process. Even so, Melanie persevered, with the unwavering support of her family and friends, who were instrumental in her success.

With a clear vision of her future goals, Melanie plans to continue her studies with a residency after completing her degree. Although she is still open to different specializations, she is particularly drawn to areas such as cardiology, neurology, and oncology. Her goal is to contribute to the advancement of veterinary medicine by introducing new approaches and innovative methods.

Melanie expressed her gratitude to her parents, who she said did everything they could to help her succeed, as well as the rest of her family and friends for their constant support throughout her journey.

In addition to her passion for veterinary medicine, Melanie also stressed the importance of having hobbies and interests outside of her profession to maintain balance. She loves playing the piano, playing tennis, and decorating her apartment, activities that help her relax and recharge.

In order to make this dream come true and help with transportation, Melanie is also asking for the community’s support through a GoFundMe campaign. She is seeking donations to help cover transportation costs during her time in Arizona. Those who would like to contribute can access the campaign at the link: Support .

With a bright future ahead of her, Melanie is ready to make her mark in the field of veterinary medicine and continue to inspire other young people to follow their dreams, no matter how challenging they may be.
