Brava is experiencing days of anguish with empty shelves, a lack of water in stores and migrants at risk of losing their jobs, people with appointments postponed due to a new disruption in maritime transport
Ilha da Brava, November 8, 2025 - For the fourth time this year, the island of Brava is facing a serious disruption in maritime transport, plunging the population into a situation of despair and uncertainty. Since November 3, Bravenses have been living through difficult days, with empty shelves, shortages of essential products, people with postponed appointments, migrants with extended vacations and the risk of losing their jobs.
The situation has a direct impact on the lives of families, local businesses and dozens of emigrants on the island who have seen their plans completely altered. Many of them, who were due to return to the United States or Europe, are already admitting the risk of losing their jobs, since there is no guarantee of when transportation will be restored.
"We're practically isolated. The shelves are empty, there's no bottled water, and those who had appointments or trips scheduled have had to postpone everything. The feeling is one of total abandonment," says a resident of Nova Sintra.
According to local traders, stocks of food, gas and drinks are already at critical levels. Some establishments have started rationing what's left, while others have simply closed their doors, unable to continue operating without replenishing goods.
The impacts are also hitting the health sector. Medical appointments and trips to other islands have been postponed, aggravating the suffering of those who depend on sea transport for regular treatment.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, there is a "sepulchral silence" among the responsible authorities. Many Bravenses criticize the lack of a concrete response from the government and the region's political representatives, who, they say, promised to defend the interests of the population but remain silent in the face of yet another crisis that exposes the island's vulnerability.
This is the fourth episode of maritime transport disruption in 2025, an alarming figure that demonstrates the structural fragility of maritime connections with Brava. The irregularity of the connections has been one of the biggest complaints of the population and emigrants, who see the island's development hampered by a problem that repeats itself year after year without a definitive solution.
"Until when will Brava pay the price of isolation?" asks one resident. "It's not just about transportation, it's about dignity. We just want to have the same conditions as other Cape Verdeans."
While promises go unfulfilled and ships continue to be absent, the small island of Brava once again feels the weight of oblivion. Between hope and revolt, the people of Brava are waiting - once again - for a boat to bring not only supplies, but also a sign that someone, somewhere, still cares about the fate of this forgotten land.
