Deputy João José Delgado (MpD) leaves the Municipal Assembly session when the budget is being voted on

Cidade de Nova Sintra, December 6, 2026 - A moment of strong tension and controversy marked the session of the Brava Municipal Assembly, held yesterday, December 5, where the Budget and Plan of Activities (POA) for 2026 was approved. Municipal deputy João José Delgado, elected by the Movement for Democracy (MpD), left the room just as the vote on the documents was being prepared.

According to the report by Bravanews, MP Delgado's act was interpreted by some sources contacted as a demonstration of resistance to the approval of the Budget, after months of criticism of the management of the Brava Municipal Council, led by Mayor Amândio Brito.

Sources heard by Bravanews indicate that deputy João José Delgado arrived at the Municipal Assembly with little openness to analyzing the budget, showing himself only willing to vote against the documents.

However, the situation took a turn when it became clear that two of his MpD peers - deputies Samuel Baptista Varela and João Paulo Silva - would vote in favor of the Budget and POA. Faced with this scenario of internal division and the imminent approval of the document, Mr. Delgado chose to leave the session.

The walkout was an unprecedented moment in the Assembly and, according to observers, underlines the growing disagreement within the MpD caucus over PAICV governance.

Bravanews tried to get a reaction from MP João José Delgado on his withdrawal from the session and the accusations that he had a predetermined position on the vote. However, as of the closing of this news piece, the MP had not replied to the messages sent by the portal.

The Budget and Activity Plan for 2026 were eventually approved with 8 votes in favor, 3 abstentions and 1 vote against (totaling 12 deputies present at the time of approval, counting the remaining MpD vote against).
