Brava: An island left to God and a "laissez faire, laissez passer" Prime Minister
In the last third of 2025, at the peak, at a very important period of the year, Ilha Brava has not forgotten the abandonment of a Prime Minister who does not communicate, does not explain, does not show sensitivity, does not visit, "laissez faire, laissez passer" to the government of maritime transport by CVI - the cause of the overwhelming scenario of an unprecedented crisis! Controversial voices are flooding the social networks showing the critical scene of an island that depends exclusively on maritime transport for the mobility of its people, those who come in for visits, tourism and business and those who need to leave for medical treatment, work and other needs. The monopoly of the CVI and its inverse management is subjecting the island to a tightrope walk - a very dangerous situation that could lead Brava to a serious economic and social crisis if it persists.
What frustrates us, creates dissatisfaction and leads us to serious reflection is that at times like these, the Prime Minister has his agenda full of political activities, but denies the facts and reality right in front of him. His pre-prepared political agendas, even if Ilha Brava roars, don't bother him or make him change what he considers to be a priority: meetings with representatives, supporters, politicians and society on the island of Fogo. CVi's routes should follow a territorial logic, but the PM's are a cabinet prototype!
It should be emphasized that Brava does not expect a "little stretch" in the visit plan. Brava expected it to be in the Plan, especially now that it has been forced into this imbroglio with no solution in sight; at the mercy of its luck. And pushing your luck, sooner or later, can lead to undesirable and even irreparable consequences.
The damage is already obvious: it's not just the shelves that are being emptied. It's lives, dreams and ambitions that are fading away that some people don't want to see through the prism of mediocre politicking. They prefer illusory narratives to sensible resolutions; empty speeches of social, economic and territorial cohesion to the reality of the facts of island integrity; the stubbornness of a sham concession under a hyper-myopic gaze and vision to the decentralized potential of transport policies, with less state interference and more encouragement for private initiatives.
The message from the people of the islands is clear: to insist on the CVI is to sentence the slow death of local and regional vitality and dynamics; it is to overshadow the faint and fragile light by the shadow of opaque minds, without light, without life and without empathy.
Traders' hands are tied. So does the population. The shortage of essential commodities can lead to bankruptcy, undermine health, increase the negative impacts of malnutrition and even hunger!
Even bottled water is in short supply. AguaBrava's own water production has been suffering for some time. The dissalination project is suffering setbacks and the possible existence of excess manganese is unforeseeable. It seems counterproductive to talk about excesses on an island with a shortage. Unfortunately that's how it is!
The island of Brava, like other islands in the country - some to a greater degree than others - cannot survive without effective and efficient connectivity, especially with the nearest islands. From an economic point of view, raw materials are scarce or, in some cases, non-existent for local enterprises without dependence on the outside world. In terms of social life, it is eroded and there are no exchanges. Tourist activity is subject to bad weather. Mobility, so essential to well-being, is weakened. Time doesn't stand still, but appointments are interrupted, postponed, over and over again! Fear reigns supreme!
The PM makes his plan, creates his strategy that only he and his supporters understand. There is no consultation with society. He has a reactionary policy: the Fogo-Brava Region decides to take its own steps in maritime transportation and the PM reacts by announcing a boat for Brava-Fogo, instead of a strategic partnership. Struggling for prominence, bordering on egocentrism, the rulers lose themselves in their own navel of shame with untimely and empty promises, believing themselves to dominate the electorate with the rhetoric of the resilience of a people.
And the old saying: "better late than never" seems to justify the time lost or the ecclesiastical verse that emphasizes that "there is time for everything under this sun" that for the politician the last day is still the mandate.
And THE UNBELIEVABLE GOES ON!
Until when?
Samuel Santiago
