Woman says she was tricked by alleged community "healer" and warns of abusive practices

City of Pawtucket, December 30, 2025 (Bravanews) - A woman, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals and public exposure, approached Bravanews to report a case that she considers deceptive, painful and deeply revolting, involving a person from the community who presented himself as capable of curing any type of illness in exchange for money.

According to the story, everything happened at a time of great emotional fragility. Her mother was seriously ill and, overcome by despair, the complainant says she turned to someone within the community who had been claiming to have spiritual powers of healing, guaranteeing positive results on payment of a certain amount.

"My mother was ill and, desperate, I went to a person in the community who claimed to cure any kind of illness in exchange for payment," the complainant told Bravanews.

According to the testimony, the woman paid 150 dollars, believing that the spiritual intervention could save or at least improve her mother's state of health. Days later, the alleged healer said a prayer, assuring that she was interceding for the patient's recovery.

However, just two days after the prayer, the complainant's mother passed away, plunging the family into deep mourning and suffering.

"Two days after the prayer, my mother died. I was devastated," she said.

Shaken not only by the loss, but also by the feeling of having been duped, the woman went back to the person who had received the money to ask for an explanation and a refund. According to the complaint, the response she received was even more shocking.

"When I went to complain and ask for my money back, she refused. She said that she prayed for the best for my mother and that, as far as she was concerned, the best thing would have been for my mother to die so that she wouldn't have to suffer any more," she said.

The complainant considers this attitude not only inhumane, but also a clear attempt to justify a service that, in practice, produced no results and exploited the suffering of others. For her, the episode constitutes an abuse of people's faith, pain and vulnerability, especially at critical times such as illness and the proximity of death.

The case raises serious concerns about the proliferation of individuals who, without any medical training or legal framework, present themselves as "healers", "mediums" or "spiritual leaders", promising miraculous cures in exchange for money. These practices, as well as being potentially fraudulent, can lead families to false hope, delay seeking proper medical care and cause irreparable financial and emotional damage.

Instigated to reveal the name of the person who scammed her, our interviewee said that for now she prefers to keep it a secret, but if she doesn't receive the amount paid she is thinking of reporting the person's name to the authorities and on social media.

Experts warn that although faith and spirituality can play an important role in emotional comfort, they should not be used as an instrument of economic exploitation, much less with absolute promises of healing. In many countries, this type of practice can amount to scamming, taking advantage of vulnerability and even the illegal exercise of health activities.

Bravanews believes that this complaint should serve as a warning to the community, especially the diaspora, where similar cases have been reported on a recurring basis. It is essential that people are vigilant, wary of easy promises and report suspicious situations to the competent authorities.

The whistleblower says she decided to make her story public to prevent other families from going through the same situation.

"I don't want anyone else, in the midst of pain and despair, to be duped like I was," she concluded.

Bravanews will continue to follow this and other similar cases, reinforcing the call for responsibility, transparency and the protection of the most vulnerable within our community.
