MpD confident that 2026 will bring improved living conditions for Cape Verdeans
The Secretary General of the MpD, Agostinho Lopes, said today that studies carried out by the party indicate that 74 percent (%) of the Cape Verdean population believe that 2026 will be a year of improved living conditions.
"Cape Verde's gains are visible to the naked eye. There are so many of them: in the area of health, employment, the country's economic growth, education, culture (...) data produced by national and international institutions indicate that Cape Verde has never been as well off as it is now," emphasized Agostinho Lopes, speaking to the press at a meeting of the National Political Commission, the MpD Parliamentary Group and members of the Government to, among other things, analyze the national political situation and discuss strategies for the 2026 legislative elections.
According to the secretary-general of the MpD, the main reason for the retreat, which is taking place at the Hotel and Tourism School in Palmarejo Grande, is to prepare for the legislative elections with a debate on the prospects, forecasts and priorities of the action plan, as well as the assistances and lists.
"The next election campaigns will certainly start in February, not to mention that there will always be a period of more heat, probably in January it will be felt more, because we have the festivities of January 3rd, when the MpD will be 35 years old, so already in that month we will feel some heat in relation to the elections," he said.
When asked about the MpD's challenges for the elections, Agostinho Lopes said that electricity, water supply and sea and air transport are cases where the situation has already been clarified, although he acknowledged that there are always unforeseen events.
"The structural problem is that we have an old network, which is in the process of being replaced and with a very high level of loss in the pipes. There's an overload, pipe bursts everywhere and sometimes it's not always possible to flow everything at the same time," he explained.
Invited to talk about some public statements made by the opposition, the secretary-general of the MpD pointed out that the opposition has been "very critical" of the energy issue and beyond, guaranteeing that electricity, water supply and air and sea transport are not debates to be taken into the elections.
As for the issue of access to higher education promised by the president of the largest opposition party, Agostinho Lopes, he only asked the journalist to name one country in the world, however developed, where higher education is free.
With regard to Cape Verde's transportation problem and the promises of affordable tickets, the MpD's general secretary said that the problem is not the prices, but the "lack of boats".
